(Disney, c.1954) This is the original wooden Nautilus model used by Walt Disney to promote the feature film "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea". The model can be seen with Walt Disney in the 1954 episode of the Disneyland television show "Operation Undersea", as well as the 1957 episode "Our Friend the Atom". When it came time for Walt Disney to introduce the Nautilus to general audiences prior to the theatrical release of the film, it was this model that Walt selected as his focal point. Constructed by hand in wood, this large Nautilus model beautifully captures the essence of the iconic feature film. Measuring approximately 44" long and displayed on a custom-built stand for the model's protection, this incredible artifact is in good condition overall with wear throughout from use. At some point after the model's initial use, the Nautilus was partially damaged leaving a few thin cracks, dings, or small breaks, and a few small areas were replaced including the ram, dorsal fin, propeller, and lenses. It is believed that once these areas were replaced, the model received a new coat of paint so that all of the areas would better match in color. However, some of the original lighter streaks of brown can be seen in areas of the model that match the coat of paint as seen in the 1950s films. Additionally, since many parts of the Nautilus were hand-carved and hand-tooled, they are unique in size and shape. These areas, such as the raker teeth on the sides and front of the model, can be easily matched to the vintage photos of Walt Disney with this exact model. This Nautilus is an incredible artifact in the creation and history of "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea", having been personally handled and used by Walt Disney himself.
