TLS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, January 21, 2000. Lengthy letter to Mr. James A. van Buskirk and his students, in part: "My heart is always filled with pride when I hear of students, such as you, being so interested in space. I am glad to learn that your teacher is leading you into one of the most fascinating studies of the twentieth century—the exploration of space. Make no mistake about it, man landing on the moon will be remembered as the greatest event of the twentieth century. My recommendation to each of you is this: don't make plans and study to be only an astronaut. Few people make it…Set your goals and plan your life studies so that a number of fields of endeavor will be available to you…Being an astronaut has had it's rewards. But I became an astronaut because, as a Marine, I had already developed an attitude of being 'the best fighter pilot in the Corps'…it came about through dedicated, hard work, long nights of studying and short and long term goal planning, while sometimes working five jobs to support a family…If you work hard, believe in yourself, have discipline in not following the crowd, listen to your parents good guidance, and study hard, you will be ready also." In fine condition. Pre-certified Zarelli Space Authentication.
