This rare and well proportioned cylinder highboy secretary is an exceptional piece.
The top of the lower portion is signed, Andreas Artz with the year 1790. The owner was German and settled in Hungary. The person listed is on the register in a small viiiage,in what used to be Transylvania and was a well known doctor.
The desk is walnut veneer on pine with rich inlay and detail work. Its provenance is Vienna. The mechanism for opening the top are two wooden wheels that invert the roll top portion to reveal beautiful inside details. Secret shelves behind small drawers and cubbies. The artisan that made this exceptional piece of furniture was clearly trying to impress with his ability to manipulate the wood. On all sides of this desk are details, inlay and carving.
The glass cabinet top measures 40 by 44 3/4 by 12 1/2 deep. The shelves are newly refurbished however the case and body are intact , the bottom portion measures 43 3/4 by 49 and 15 1/4 deep. There are three distinct drawers with beautiful inlay patterning on each drawer reflecting the round detailed circle on the roll top portion.
Once open, the desk reveals a solid desk that is stained black, its original color.
There has clearly been restoration to this piece which includes cleaning and retooling the wooden wheel mechanism that allows the rool top portion to open. This is a museum quality piece that is truly one of a kind.More photos available upon request.
