Walnut chest, two-over-three dovetailed drawers with molded lips, yellow pine secondary, fluted quarter columns, ogee bracket feet with shaped returns, half ogee feet at back, three-quarter dust panels, top with applied molding, horizontal yellow pine tongue-and-groove backboards with cut nails, original double block foot blocking with large rosehead nails, old oil finish, several drawers with undetermined pencil inscriptions, attributed to James Gheen, Rowan County, North Carolina, working 1787-1796, 49-1/2 x 44-1/2 x 20-1/2 in. Some restoration to glue blocks, top with filled separation, other separations, repairs and restorations throughout. Provenance: Found near Davie/Rowan County line, about 10 miles from site of Gheen shop; Griffin Collection.
