Walnut Corner Cupboard Tenn Virginia
Its hard to describe this cupboard with fairness. I honestly like it too much. This cupboard is so elegantly plain yet, it has everything you could want. Provenance: this came from a family that has long lived (since 1851) in Grainger County, Tennessee, but they were not sure if it came from a Great Grandmother who married into the family from Virginia. There is an old refinished surface, and other than the hinges on the right side of the upper door, everything is original. Even to the feet. The back boards have the old cut nails holding the shelves, the top crown molding is totally original and the sides go back straight from the front, as opposed to angled back. Wooden hand planed door panels, square pegs, pretty cut out apron on the front base. The front corners have what is known as lamb tongue detailing and the interior bottom of the shelves have candle burns. The cupboard dates to 1840-50, my bet would be Tennessee but with the outside chance, it could be Virginia. Either way, its Southern, tall and slim. 39" wide, 18" deep, 28" deep corner. Remains of painting from rooms in the residence are on the back corners or edges of the straight side but not visible from the front that could be easily removed without damaging the rest of the surface. The secondary wood is Poplar and even the back center foot does not need, as we say in the South, a Broadway Baptist Hymnal to hold up the cupboard and make it straight. If you want a really good, original cupboard, in Walnut, you will be more than happy. This came from the old family home in Tennessee and is being sold with no reserve.
