Here is a summary of what we found: Edward Hopper was a well known twentieth century artist that found a passion in painting everyday American life in the early 1900s. Hopper derived his subject matter from Two (2) primary sources: One (1), the common features of American life (gas stations, motels, restaurants, theaters, railroads, and street scenes) and its inhabitants; and Two (2), seascapes and rural landscapes. Most of Hopper's figure paintings focus on the subtle interaction of human beings with their environment carried out with solo figures, couples, or groups. His primary emotional themes are solitude, loneliness, regret, boredom, and resignation. He expresses the emotions in various environments, including the office, in public places, in apartments, on the road, or on vacation. As if he were creating stills for a movie or tableaux in a play, Hopper positioned his characters as if they were captured just before or just after the climax of a scene Edward Hopper was known to have a great passion for the theater. Many of Hopper's paintings take place inside or near the theater. Waiting Behind the Theater is believed to had been painted sometime between 1925 & 1935, the period of time when Edward Hopper began seeing measurable success. Hopper is most popularly known for his oil paintings, especially One (1) in particular known as Nighthawk. Nighthawk is believed to be inspired by the short story, The Killers by Earnest Hemingway. Shortly after The Killers was published, Edward Hopper wrote the author to express his gratitude for such a refreshing and honest story. A matter of years later, The Killers, was made into a film, the main star in this film was actor Burt Lancaster. During the making of The Killers, Edward Hoppers most famous painting Nighthawk was believed to set the tone for the movie. Once The Killers was released, Burt Lancaster's acting career took off. Waiting Behind the Theater is believed to have been acquired from Edward Hopper by Burt Lancaster in the mid 1950's. The painting has appeared in various art publications in the mid 1990's. This painting was slated for auction in 2004 but was pulled from the sale due to a dispute between the owner and the auction house. The owner claims that the auction house kept the ornate frame which is why there is no frame present. Please note that authenticating art from this time period is getting more difficult as the years go by. Many authenticators and appraisers are less willing to declare paintings as absolute originals due to the fact of the possibility of getting sued whether they say the piece is authentic or not authentic. Please note that we cannot prove prove that this painting is authentic or not. We are offering it for sale and we try to provide as much information as possible so you the buyer, can make an educated purchase.
