“First Edition Lithograph after the original oils by Charles Bird King and James Otto Lewis 1836-1844”
This print measures 10.5 x 15 and the mat measures 20 x 16. There is very little wear except for small small marks on the lower left corner, howevere the print is in fine condition. Wa-Kwan-Ha-Ka or "Snake-Skin," a Winnebago war chief, was the son of a Frenchman and a Winnebago woman. He is described as having a graceful manner, and he acted as a principal speaker for the Winnebago on all public occasions. He opposed the encroachment of the U.S. government on Indian land and culture, and once said that "the Great Spirit had made the skin of the Indian red, and that soap and water could not make it white." James Otto Lewis originally painted his portrait, and Charles Bird King later copied it. HKA#63689
