Incorporated in Wyoming in 1904. Cert. #18262, issued for 1,000 shares in 1908 to John E. Plummer. Signed by E.M. Cobb as president and E.A. Norton as secretary. State seal vignette. Black and green on crème. 11.5” x 7.75”. U/C. The company controlled the Ferris-Haggerty mine after the North American Copper Company went bust. Ed Haggerty discovered the copper ore at this mine in 1897, although copper was found in the area dating to 1874. After the smelter burned in 1905, coupled with the lack of railroad transportation, the company was in dire straits again. The smelter was rebuilt in 1907 and burned again. The company then re-organized into the United Smelters, Railway and Copper Company (see certificates also listed in auction). Estimated copper production was $2 million (grandencampmentmuseum.org website). Shady operations doomed the successor company as well. Western Bank Note Co. Chicago. EF
