This is an example of a World War II Remington Model 1903-A4 sniper rifle that was manufactured in 1943 and subsequently Arsenal refurbished. The rifle was rebuilt at the Rock Island Arsenal and has a Rock Island Arsenal "RIA/EB" inspection mark stamped on the left side of the stock. The rifle is fitted with a post-war M84 Telescopic Sight with 3/4-inch rings on the original Redfield sight base and has a walnut, semi-pistol grip "scant" stock. The stock is fitted with a replacement Model 1903, smooth buttplate. The rifle has the correct Remington "R" marked bolt with the handle milled for scope clearance. The sling swivel, trigger guard, lower barrel band, upper sling swivel and upper barrel band are the correct Model 1903-A4 stamped components. The barrel is correctly not fitted with a front sight or front sight base. The barrel, receiver, bolt and stock furniture all have the typical post-war gray-green parkerized finish. The receiver has the distinctive Model 1903-A4 markings that consist of "U.S./REMINGTON/MODEL 03-A3" on the left side of the receiver between the edge of the stock and the telescopic sight base. The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the serial number "4992789". The barrel is roll-stamped with "R A" above the Ordnance "Shell & Flame" insignia and the date "12 43". The left side of the stock is stamped "RA" followed by the Ordnance escutcheon and the Ordnance inspector's initials "FJA". A circled "P" proof mark is stamped on the inside of the scant pistol grip. Four Remington sub-inspection marks are stamped on the bottom of the stock in front of the trigger guard/floor plate. The scant semi-pistol grip stock is correct for a late-production Model 1903-A4 rifle and has the bolt-clearance milling found only on stocks made for sniper rifles. "REDFIELD" is stamped on the right rear of the scope base. The telescopic sight base and rings are parkerized. The M84 telescopic sight has the original blue-black finish and retains the original rubber eyecup. The scope has the standard post and cross-hair reticle. The black enamel data plate on the right side of the scope body is marked "TELESCOPE/M84/SERIAL No. 11919". The Model 1903-A4 was the primary U.S. Army sniper rifle during WWII. Following the war, most of the Model 1903-A4 rifles were overhauled at various arsenals and Ordnance depots and placed in war reserve. This rifle has not been re-issued after the RIA overhaul.
