Two weaponry relics recovered from the site of the famous 'Great Escape' Stalag Luft III prison camp, including: the upper portion of a Bakelite grip for a Maschinenpistole 40 submachine gun, measuring approximately 2? x 2? x 1?; and a 9.75? long military fighting knife, its wooden handle now lost. In overall very good condition, with heavy wear and rusting. Provenance: The War Museum. Stalag Luft III was a German POW camp in Silesia (now western Poland), which was operated by the Luftwaffe and held captured British and American airmen. It is best known for being the site of the massive breakout of 76 men, depicted in the classic film The Great Escape starring Steve McQueen.
