WWII Soviet Cossack Shashka Cavalry Saber with Attached Mosin Nagant Bayonet
Post-Revolution, Cossack Shashka with canvas, brass-mounted scabbard and attached Mosin Nagant socket bayonet. The saber has a bright, 32-inch, fluted blade. The saber hilt has a cast brass pommel carved wooden grip. The pommel is decorated with a simple cast star and Hammer & Sickle emblems. The reverse ricasso is stamped with a maker's mark and the date "1941". The scabbard is constructed of black-painted canvas with cast brass tip, throat and three reinforcing bands. One band has a suspension ring and three bands have loops to support a Mosin Nagant triangular socket bayonet. The bayonet is blued with an 18-inch angular blade. The bayonet socket is stamped with a serial number and several inspection marks. The Soviet Army retained several horse-mounted cavalry divisions throughout WWII and the Soviet Cossack regiments were armed with their traditional Shashqa cavalry sabers like this example as well as bolt-action Mosin Nagant rifles and carbines. This is a rarely encountered example of a WWII Cossack cavalry saber.
