WWII Portuguese Contract 98K Rifle with High Turret Sniper Scope
This is a very nice example of a 1941 Portuguese contract 98K rifle that has been converted into a high turret sniper rifle. These rifles were a late war commercial contract that was stopped and reissued to the German troops in 1941. The top of the receiver probably has the Portuguese Crest over "1941", however it is covered by the front base and the left side is marked with the Eagle swastika firing proof ahead of the "F" prefix commercial serial number. The left side receiver wall is marked "MAUSER-WERKE A.G. OBERNDORF A.N.". The left side of the barrel behind the rear sight is marked with the eagle firing proof and three "eagle / 135" proofs. The front sight is the standard inverted "V" with the military adjustable rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. As noted, the rifle has been professionally fitted with a set of high turret scope bases, rings and a wartime "cad" marked snipe scope with the correct range markings on top of the turret; the front scope ring has been numbered to match the rifle. It has the correct and matching all milled components. The rifle has the correct military stock and handguard with the pistol grip area and right side of the butt both stamped with the "eagle/swastika / WaA135" proofmark. The left side of the buttstock is stamped with the Portuguese Crest over "1941" and the underside is also stamped "11829G". It is complete with a hooded front sight and cleaning rod.
BBL: 24 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 8 mm Mauser
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: F3591
Condition: Very good with approximately half of the faded wartime finish remaining with wear on the barrel bands, trigger guard and floor plate. The stock and handguard are both in very good condition showing a nice matching honey brown color with minor handling marks and light pressure dents overall from field use with a couple of heavier ones on the right side of the forend. The reproduction scope rings and bases retain 98% of their blue finish and the scope has 98% of its finish. Overall its a nice looking rifle.
