WWII Nazi War Merit Cross. The War Merit Cross was created by Adolf Hitler in 1939 as a successor to the noncombatant Iron Cross. The War Merit Cross could be awarded to military personnel and civilians alike as it was awarded for non-combat actions. Like the Iron Cross, there were several grades to the War Merit Cross with those being, from lowest to highest, Second Class, First Class, and Knights Cross of the War Merit Cross. The cross also came with swords and without swords with the swords denoting military service. This cross has the crossed swords, meaning that it was awarded to someone in military service. The front of the cross has a swastika in an oak wreath in the center of the cross. The back has the year 1939 in an oak wreath in the center of the cross. The cross has a bronze like finish and comes with the proper ribbon. Cross has some finish loss but no damage. Good condition.
