WWII U-Boat Ace Otto Kretschmer Autographed Photo. Otto Kretschmer was the commander of U-23 and later U-99 where he sank 47 ships for a total of 274,333 tons sunk within the span of two years and became Germany’s number one U-boat ace. He received the Knights Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords for his actions and was known for his daring attacks against destroyers. Kretschmer earned the nickname “Silent Otto” for maneuvering his U-Boat stealthily and for his reluctance to radio reports during patrols. Kretschmer was captured by the British on March 17, 1941 after coming under attack from destroyers HMS Walker and HMS Vanoc. Kretschmer was known for being an honorable sailor that would help the survivors of the ships that he sunk.
