This is an example of a J. P. Sauer & Sohns 38H pocket pistol that was issued to the German Police. The serial number of this pistol, places the production in Jan-Mar 1943. At this time Sauer introduced the late war flat/milled type of blued finish while still retaining the steel trigger, full slide legend and thumb safety. This pistol was consigned directly by the WWII vet who liberated it in 1945. It has the single "Eagle/C" police proof stamped on the left trigger guard bow with the "Eagle/N" commercial proof on the right side of the frame under the serial number and upper portion of the slide. The left side of the slide is marked "J.P. SAUER & SOHNS, SUHL/CAL. 7,65" while the right is marked "PATENT". The franzite grips are a dark brown/black mottled color similar to Walther grips, which the Vet said he replaced in 1946, as he didn't like the black ones that has the circled "SuS" logo on the lower section. There are two small initials (EQ) on the bottom flat of the frame behind the magazine floor plate. Complete with the original black smooth leather Police marked holster. The only Nazi proofs are a single "Eagle/B" police proof on the front section with a partial makers ink stamp on the inside of the upper flap. An exact holster is pictured on page 127 of the J.P. Sauer & Sohns book by Cate and Van Gijn. This rig is complete with one early blue magazine with the "SuS" logo and caliber markings on the base plate and one late war spare magazine with the cast zinc base plate.
BBL: 3 1/4 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 7.65 mm auto
Finish: blue
Grips: brown plastic checkered
Serial Number: 372637
Condition: Very fine with 98% of the original late wartime flat blue finish with a small rub mark present on the left side of the slide. The grips are excellent with nice checkering and as noted were replaced in 1946, however original ones are easy to find which would correct this example. The holster is also excellent with nice tight white stitching overall, with a clear sharp police proof on the front of the holster. There are only a couple of very minor rub marks on the high point of the flap and lower toe of the magazine pocket. The spare magazine is also excellent. A nice example of a mid-WWII Police issue J.P. Sauer & Sohns Police rig.
