WWII Nazi Graf Spee Crew Autographed Photo
WWII Nazi Graf Spee Crew Autographed Photo. The Graf Spee was a pocket battleship that saw action in the early years of WWII. Graf Spee was under the command of Hans Langsdorff and began its attack against Allied merchant vessels when war with Britain was certain. It participated in the Battle of the River Plate, where she damaged the British cruisers HMS Exeter and HMS Ajax. She was then scuttled in the port of Montevideo, Uruguay due to the belief that much larger British forces would intercept her if she were to break out of the harbor. Langsdorff would commit suicide shortly after and the crew would end up in Argentina for the remainder of the war. Autographs of survivors are mostly clear on the matting, some signatures faded but legible. The message in pen on the top and bottom says "Crew of Armored Ship Admiral Graf Spee, In memory of our stay on Martin Garcia Island". Martin Garcia Island is an Argentine island where the surviving crew of the Graf Spee was interned in 1943. Included is a certificate of authenticity. Good condition. From the Michael Clifton collection.
