WWII German Long Slide-Rail Sniper 98k Bolt Action Rifle, by Gustloff Werke (code ''bcd'' 4), #28549, 8mm, 24'' barrel, blue finish, laminated beech stock, Dialytan 4x scope, with ''bek'' code, similar to the rifle pictured on page 167 of ''Sniper Variations of the 98k'', by Richard Law. Condition is very good as reconverted from sporter to military configuration. This particular rifle was recently discovered in Texas as it had been brought home by a serviceman and then sporterized. Not altering the metal, he only cut down the stock and omitted the upper handguard. Left side of receiver shows no extra flat milling for scope mount. A period correct stock has been installed, as has a sling, and as the side-mount spider screws were missing, non-original replacements have been installed, which should be corrected. Metal ring just forward of rear sight affixes to the back of the upper handguard and should also be replaced. Bolt, bolt head, receiver and barrel are all matching; stock is not. Stamped triggerguard marked ''LU'', as well as ''GNW''. Barrel and receiver have been refinished at one point but show very well. Light spotting and very mild corrosion to scope tube, with very good optics that should be lightly cleaned. Action is smooth and crisp, bore is fine. A great mostly original sniper rifle that with just a little work could be brought back to excellent. Est.: $2,500-$3,500. (C&R)
