WWII BATTLE ACTION PAINTING OF THE CAULDRON BY A

BEARDSLEY. 30 x 24" Oil on canvas image of the end of the battle of Gazala, thought to be Romel's greatest North African victory. Painting shows withdrawal of the 200th Guards Brigade from Nightsbridge Box on 13-14 June, 1942. Nightsbridge Box was the last of several "boxes" or defensive positions to fall before the taking of Tobruk. Painting shows British forces organizing to retreat w/ loaded trucks in foreground, tanks still firing in background to cover withdrawal. The sky is illuminated w/ canon flashes, anti aircraft fire & flares. Painter's signature "A. Beardsley" (noted professional marine painter who actually was in "The Cauldron") is at lower left. Painting is in black paint & gilt frame & has identifying plaque at bottom. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: voluminous provenance regarding the painter, the battle & the history of this painting. CONDITION: very fine, clean & bright w/ some minor rubs along right edge. There are no noted overpaintings or repairs. (02-16620/MGM). 1,000-1,500.
