Marine Corps service tunic with an Indian head patch on a red background sewn to the left sleeve, along with a PFC rank chevron, honorable discharge chevron, and two overseas service chevrons. The Indian head is painted on the cloth star and the star is sewn to a square shaped piece of red wool. The tunic has the correct collar discs and all buttons. The inside of the tunic is stamped "3-S" and "Quartermaster's / U.S. Marine Corps / 1918-1919". The tunic comes with service uniform trousers. The inside of the waist is stamped "2-M" and "Quartermaster's Dept. / U.S. Marine Corps / 1918-1919", and the pair of trousers feature correct "U.S. MARINE CORP" buttons. A canvas United States Navy medical bag is included with this lot. The Indian head patch as featured on the original WWI Marine Corps tunic is the insignia for the 6th Marine Regiment, an infantry regiment that is currently based at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. The 6th Marine Regiment was activated in 1917 and was under the command of Medal of Honor holder Colonel Alertus W. Catlin. From late 1917 to early 1918, the regiment arrived in France to join the 5th Marine Regiment and 6th Machine Gun Battalion to become the 4th Brigade, U.S. 2nd Division (Regular), American Expeditionary Force. In March the regiment had its first combat experience and first combat casualties in the trenches of the Toulon Sector near Verdun. In June the 6th Regiment took part in the Battle of Belleau Wood which proved to be a landmark Marine Corps battle. For their efforts, the French government awarded all Marine units at Bealleau Wood the Croix de guerre with Palm and renamed Belleau Wood "Bois de la Brigade de Marine". Before the war ended the 6th Regiment received the Croix de guerre three times tor the actions at Belleau Wood, Soissons, and Blanc Mont, and is one of two U.S. Marine Corps units to be authorized to wear the fourragère of the croix de guerre. During World War II the regiment fought in the Pacific Theater and saw combat at Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. Decades later the regiment would again see combat during the 1991 Gulf War and in support of operation Iraqi Freedom.
