WWI U.S. Winchester 1917 Bolt Action Rifle
This is a very fine example of a U.S. WWI Winchester Model 1917 bolt action rifle. These 1917 rifles were the primary WWI bolt action service rifle and were eventually used even into the early part of WW II. They are a primary piece in any martial arms collection. The top of the receiver has the standard markings of "U.S./MODEL OF 1917/WINCHESTER/205212" in four lines. The barrel is stamped with "W"/ ordnance bomb/"3-18". The majority of the various major components are correctly marked with a "W" except the complete bolt assembly which was produced by Remington Arms. The "eagle-head/500" and "eagle-head/04" inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the stock in front and in back of the trigger guard. The left side of the receiver rail is stamped with the ordnance bomb and the top of the receiver rail has two eagle-head inspection stamps. All components have a deep, nearly commercial quality, blue finish and the stock and handguard are oil finished walnut.
BBL: 26 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 30 06
Finish: blue
Grips:
Serial Number: 205212
Condition: Excellent with 95% of the original blue finish showing some browning on the middle barrel band with some thinning and wear on the exposed section of the barrel and front barrel band along with edge and high spot wear on the trigger guard, trigger guard bow, top of the receiver and the buttplate. The stock and handguard are all in very good plus condition with some minor handling marks and couple of pressure dents in a few places with some light finish wear from rubbing on the sides of the forend and on top of the handguards. Although the rifle has a Model 1917 Remington marked bolt, it can be replaced if you locate a correct one or leave it as is as the finish closely matches to the rest of the rifle. A nice representative example of a WWI Winchester 1917 rifle.
