WWI U.S. SOLDIER'S POSTCARD DIARY - MARYLAND
Interesting group of 112 postcards sent from Col. Richard Charles O'Connell, during his time in the 116th Ambulance Co. of the 104th Sanitary Train of the US Army during WWI. Approx. 70 postcards are signed by O'Connell or identify when and where he spent his time during his service. One postcard reads, 'Left Ipplecourt [sp] Hiked 9 1/2 kilos to Ramfort Left at 5:30PM Arriving Ramfort 1AM 1st Oct. Camped in stable & shell torn buildings.' Another reads, 'Left Camp Sud Oct 5th 9PM Hiked to Glorieux on Outskirts of Verdun. Arrive Glorieux 2AM Oct 6th, Shrapnel & high Explosive shells dropping in Glorieux.' Another reads, '1:30PM Oct 10th Div Surg send word for [illegible] Station to advance. Hell itself we went into, 4 men killed We getting slight touch of its [illegible]. Mined Field M.P. Yelling'. According to the postcards, O'Connell spent time in Saint-Melany, Nice, Voisey, Ventinigilia, Cherbourge, the coast of England, Garrett Island in Maryland, Havre de Grace in Maryland, Camp McClellan, and Iron Camp Mills in Long Island. WITH: WWI medal ribbon bar for British War, World War I Victory, Mexican Border Service, and two unidentified ribbons.
