Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Charles W. Whittlesey typed letter signed on official Military Training Camps Association stationery. He signed the 28 July 1919 letter ''C.W. Whittlesey'' as the association's treasurer. Whittlesey was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his leadership of the doomed 308th Battalion of the 77th Infantry that famously fought to the bitter end of the Battle of the Argonne Forest in 1918. Surrounded and outnumbered, the decimated battalion rejected an offer by the German forces to surrender. Whittlesey is presumed to have committed suicide in light of his disappearance from a ship in 1921. Single page letter measures 8.5'' x 11''. Toning, creasing and chipping to edges of the fragile paper. Very good condition.
