WWI Letter from English Soldier, 1915.
A letter from R.A.B. (R. A. Boyce), sent to S. Chilton in Cirencester, Gloucester, October 15, 1915, the envelope with Censor stamp and Field Post stamp. Three handwritten sheets (8in x 4 7/8in). The letter thanks the recipient for a cake, and goes on to describe circumstances on the battlefield. He writes: "We are in the trenches again after having a rest a few miles behind the firing line. The last time we were in was a very rough time... heavy bombardment was a strain on us." And, "We have some Kitcheners in with us this time for their training. The Royal Irish Rifles & have one of the signallers in the dugout with us... one of our officers was killed in front of our line..." He goes on to describe more of the experience, the cold, and how they had had a Battalion concert. Condition: One sheet with a portion at bottom torn off, light toning, folds/creases; the envelope with tears, losses, staining. Together with two checks made out to R. A. Boyce, dated 1920 and 1921. Signed by Nora A. Boyce, and William D. Boyce (perhaps his parents); with notations on back for the debt paid. Both with creases and large fold tears/one almost split.
