Appointed 2nd Lt. in Coldstream Guards, 3rd Battalion, 1890. 1st Lt. in 1893, Captain in 1899, and Major in 1905. Special Extra Regimental employment, 1896-97. In Uganda Protectorate, 1898-1900. With the Rhodesian Field Force, 1900-1901. Awards: Order of the Bath, Order of St. Michael & St. George, East and West Africa Medal(1887-1900) with "Niger 1897" bar from expeditions to Egbon, Bida and Florin. The East and Central Africa Medal (1897--99) with "Uganda 1898" bar for expedition against the Ugandan Somalis. Queen's South African Medal (1899-190) with "Rhodesia" bar for operations with the Rhodesian Field Force in 1900, the "Elandslaagte" bar for actions at the Battle of Elands River from August 4-16, 1900.
