Brigadier General Holmes enlisted in the U.S. Air Corp. in 1940 and retired after 35 years of service with the rank of Brigadier general in 1975. Col. Holmes moved to Gulfport in 1953. He was the Commander of the ANG base at Gulfport for 22 years prior to his retirement. He served three years overseas during World War II as group bombardier in a medium bomb group. Brigadier General Holmes flew over 40 combat missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and many other decorations.
