WW1 - US NAVY RECRUITING POSTER

Recruiting Poster (43.5" x 31.25")
Fine+ on Linen; Artwork by Henry Reuterdahl
US Government Printing, 1917

Promoting enlistment in the United States Navy, this 1917 poster by artist Henry Reuterdahl showcases camaraderie among Allied sailors. Each sailor is depicted standing proudly over the national ensign of his respective country, with his ship visible in the background. From left to right, the sailors represent Japan, France, the United States, Great Britain, Russia, and Italy. Notably, the British sailor is adorned with a distinctive "sennit" cover, a component of the tropical uniform used until 1921. Prior to linen-backing, this example was folded and had several "V"-shaped tears along the upper and lower edges that were corrected and are still slightly visible. The lower left corner had separated and was reattached and random edge tears were corrected. This vintage recruitment poster presents beautifully and is a nice example of how the US and he allies came together for this important cause.

When America declared war in April 1917, it faced a significant shortage of both manpower and material necessary for combat. In response, the government swiftly launched a vigorous recruitment drive, with the US Navy becoming the first American government agency to produce wartime posters.
