WW GREENER MARTINI ACTION LIGHT HARPOON GUN.
Cal. 38. S# S10175. Bbl. 20". Largely gaining its fame from the box office smash Jaws, the Greener Light Harpoon gun is a fascinating instrument of nautical lore. Before being fielded by Robert Shaw in a race for his life & that of his fellow citizens of Amity Island, it was mfg. by W.W. Greener. The Martini action was modified as a light harpoon gun used for whaling & harvesting of large oceanic fish. The harpoon itself, measuring over 14" in length w/ a retractable broadhead, was launched by use of a .38 blank cartridge for propulsion. The 20" bbl. is utilized as a smooth bore spigot which traps the gasses of the dart which slides over the bbl. for stability. Through the use of a detachable line holder, the dart is tethered to the craft for retrieval after firing. In order to properly utilize this system, the line holder is attached along w/ the line which also connects to the dart. The dart is then placed over the bbl. & snapped into its resting point over a spring loaded ball detent which secures it prior to firing. The Martini style action is then opened & a blank is inserted for firing. The front of the action has a notch which acts as a rear sight coinciding w/ the top of the blade being fired which is utilized as a front sight. This system is a takedown design w/ a full threaded bbl. relationship in the action along w/ a pressure screw. Finish on exposed metal surfaces is a deep rich bluing which matches the dark hardwood stock set. Shoulder stock has a rubber recoil pad marked w/ an S W. Receiver is largely unmarked aside from a crown proof mark w/ the letters “BNP” below it often signifying Birmingham Nitro Proof & the S# in front of the trigger guard.
