A clipped signature, ¼"x3½", of British author and poet </span><b><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext;text-transform:uppercase'>Rudyard Kipling</span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt; font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'> (1865-1936); and a 3¼"x2" card signed by American political cartoonist </span><b><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family: Arial;color:windowtext;text-transform:uppercase'>Thomas Nast</span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial; color:windowtext'> (1840-1902), adding date “<i>Feb 21 — 1874</i>.” Both are boldly penned. Last letter of Kipling’s name closely trimmed; o/w VG. Also present is a portion of an interesting political Autograph Manuscript, 1p, 8vo, n.p., n.d. Unsigned. Sent with a transmittal note on <i>New York Tribune</i> letterhead, 1874, in response to a request by John English for an autograph by Tribune founder </span><b><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext; text-transform:uppercase'>Horace Greeley</span></b><span style='font-size: 12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'> (1811-1872) who was an antislavery political activist and editor of the <i>Tribune</i> for 31 years. In his typical illegible hand, Greeley writes In part, “<i>The last assembly stood 36 Republicans to 24 Democratic, we shall probably lose. two or three members in Hudson which we gained last year by Democratic divisions while the Democrats lose one each in Hunterden, Sussex. and Warren by increased population in Hudson and Union</i> [?]. <i>On the whole we consider a Republican ascending in either branch wholly certain</i>...” Light soiling; o/w VG.</span></p>
