(WOUNDED KNEE MASSACRE)NEWSPAPER: An odd first report to the events leading to the Wounded Knee massacre, as reported in the "Minneapolis Evening Tribune", Dec. 29, 1890, the day of the actual massacre. The related front page headlines read: "REPORTED BATTLE - BIG FOOT SURRENDERS HIS BAND", "Sitting Bull's Followers are Included", and "They are Weary of Running Around and Will Be Good Indians". The newspaper report reports that while the Indians stated that they wished to surrender and were outnumbered by the American cavalry by 10 to 1, :"...The General opinion is that the surrender of Bigfoot is not in good faith. The Indians still retain their arms. The party is, however, being watched, and the first false move will precipitate a fight...". Ironically, on that very day, the attempt by the army to confiscate the Indian's weapons would result in the actual massacre. Evenly toned and somewhat brittle as are all newspapers of this period, overall very good. $150-200
