Some 300 Lakota were gunned down, including Big Foot. Lacking only the ramrod, this French percussion rifle is marked “M 1842/66” with 40½" barrel with nipple, 17.5 mm Cal. There are four decorative metal tacks along the top ridge of the butt. Stamped on the right side of the frame is the manufacturer “M R de Chatellerault” behind the hammer. The number “166” is stamped on the barrel and barely visible. Attached to one of the strap hinges is the original nametag used at the time of capture that identifies the Indian, Afraid of the Enemy. Though the rifle is lightly rusted, the hammer and trigger are fully functional and strap hinges are in place. The top end of the butt around the frame is cracked evidencing minor repair with wood screws, wire and a nail. The under part of the stock has light overspray from paint. It is in otherwise Fair to Good condition. Provenance includes a letter stating how the rifle was last obtained in Davenport, IA. Taken from the field and stored in the Rock Island Arsenal until 1897, it was released to Iowa Prof. J. W. Ellis. A copy of the statement certifying that release to Ellis is also included. In full, “Rock Island Arsenal, Illinois, May 18, 1897. This is to certify that the eight captured Indian arms delivered to Prof. J. W. Ellis from this arsenal and now in his possession were captured from Indians at the battle of Wounded Knee, and at that time were in the possession of the Indians whose names are on the tags tied to the guns. Was present at the time of the receipt of the aforesaid guns, and know them to be authentic.” Signed in print “F. D. Seiberling Ass’t Foreman.” Prof. James W. Ellis (1848-1907) was a veteran of both the Civil War and the Indian Wars. He was wounded at Petersburg in 1864 and again in 1868 fighting the Cheyenne at the Battle of Washita. Other material pertinent to Prof. Ellis also present.
