Indebted both to the plein-air painting of the Barbizon masters and the atmospheric “arrangements” of Whistler, this view of the surf near Bay Head, New Jersey evokes the sense of wind on sand and water through a palette of soft blues, silvers and browns. During the final decade of his life, Whittredge lived at his home “Hillcrest” near Summit, New Jersey. The site of the present scene at the head of Barnegat Beach Island is approximately 60 miles from New York, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City.

During his long career, Worthington Whittredge served two terms as president of the National Academy of Design and was intimately involved with both the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition and the founding of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Anthony Janson has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work.

Condition Report: unlined canvas

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
