WORLDWIDE: AE token (5.06g), ND (ca. late 1700s?), Guttag-4857, "GP" countermark in circular depression surrounded by dots with crude rosette at bottom, host is worn smooth, old museum number "3966" on reverse, F-VF, ex Charles Opitz Collection. The only reference we could find for this countermark is the Guttag Collection of Latin America, where it is listed as unattributed. The holder supplied by the consignor states "Portuguese Africa-Rare." We think this could be from Portuguese Africa (cf. Azores countermarks), the Caribbean, or could perhaps even be a United States token. The museum number likely refers to the former Money Museum of the National Bank of Detroit, as some other items ' of the consignor 's have this pedigree.
