(WORLD WAR I POW POSTCARDS)
1040. WORLD WAR I POW POSTCARDS An interesting grouping of 21 original postcards from World War I, showing Belgian soldiers interred in the Camp de Zeist POW camp in The Netherlands. According to a newspaper article (likely from The Brooklyn Eagle) which accompanies the lot, this grouping was assembled by De Paune Remi, a Belgian soldier, who amassed the grouping during his confinement in his desire to trade cards with other inmates "...in order to spend my very long confinement". The postcards, whose legends are printed in both German and French, show inmates at work unloading train cars, distributing soup, returning from a walk, getting haircuts, lining up for baths, and showing the camp's buildings, roads, and so forth. Each card bears an "Interned" stamp on verso, and in addition to the clipping with Remi's letter, includes a longer newspaper article about the Belgian POW's. In very good, clean condition. A most unusual grouping, surely worthy of further research. $200-300
