(WORLD WAR I PHOTO ALBUM): A great World War I photo album compiled by Corp. Lonnie J. Everton, 116th Infantry, American Expeditionary Force, while in France and Germany 1918-1919. Virtually a photographic diary containing approximately 270 personal snapshots, real photo postcards, and published photos for the soldier market, depicting the life of a doughboy and chronicling the experience of his unit in the trenches and towns of war-torn France. Contained throughout the album are many great shots showing the motorized military machines of both sides, namely zeppelins, crashed planes, tanks, and bombed cars. The German, American, and French high command are also shown. There are numerous images of soldiers in the trenches, outside of public buildings, or just playing for the camera with some of the more grisly images showing death soldiers and skeletal remains on the battlefield or in the trenches. The most poignant, although most likely staged, image depicts the affect of mustard gas upon the American soldiers as they charge across a barren field. A great album linked to a hard fought infantry unit that was organized from Virginia's national guard units seeing heavy action along the Meuse River in France and which produced two natural heroes. The first man won the MOH for single handedly capturing numerous machine gun placements and 19 Germans while the other man inspired a world renowned poet to pen a poem based on his actions on the battlefield that resulted in his death. Typical wear and looseness affecting the album and pages with some of the images loose and therefore, wrinkled or creased, overall very good. $400-600
