(WORLD WAR I CORRESPONDENCE): A large grouping of material relative to the wartime experiences of Frank and Lynn Wadsworth. Frank Wadworth was a member of the 101st. Machine Gun Battalion, part of the 26th. (Yankee) division. The division arrived in France in September 1917, and after intensive training, was assigned to a sector on the front lines near Toul. They first saw action in April, 1918. In July, 1918 they relieved the 2nd Division in the Belleau Wood area and defended against the German Aisne-Marne Offensive at Chateau-Thierry and later saw action in the reduction of the St. Mihiel salient. According to a War Department memorandum dated Jan 20, 1919, Frank C. Wadsworth "...Machine Gun Battalion, was slightly gassed about Oct. 30, 1918..." The lot also includes Frank Wasdworth's Allied victory medal with rainbow ribbon replete battle clasps for Campagne-Marne, Ainse-Marne, St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne, and the Defensive Sector as well as two other commemorative medals, one for Verdun and the other a congratulatory medal from Frank's Hometown, Warehouse Point, Conn. The lot also includes numerous photographs from France including what appears to be a image taken in the trenches showing the interior of a small trench bunker. Other photos show graves, barracks, and other scenes. The lot also includes a large volume of correspondence from Frank's brother Lynn, who was attached to a unit that spent much of the war at camp in Fitchburg, Mass. Lynn was sent over later in the war with a division that was designed to become replacements for units decimated in battle. Fortunately for Lynn, he did not get the chance to see any action during the war. Lot also includes Frank Wadsworth's Gillette safety razor, a "U.S. Service Set" in chrome case with a full set of paper wrapped razor blades. An interesting lot of material in good to very good condition. Collection includes approximately twenty photographs and about 100 letters. $300-400
