On 22 September 1914, Weddigen in command of the submarine U-9 sank the three British cruisers, HMS Aboukir, HMS Cressy and HMS Hogue. In October he sank HMS Hawke, and in February 1915 four merchant ships. He was in command of the U-29 when, on 18 March 1915, she was rammed by HMS Dreadnought in the Pentland Firth, adjacent to the Orkney Islands, Scotland. There were no survivors from the submarine which had been cruising at periscope depth.
