WORLD COINS. AUSTRALIA. Queen Victoria, Adelaide Exhibition 1881. Prize Medal. AV 14.96g. 29mm. Classical figures with attributes of industry and the arts, ADELAIDE 1881 in exergue. Rev. Inscription in wreath, AWARDED TO BARNET SAMUEL & SONS LONDON. Rare. Light scratches on obverse. Very fine

A Russian Jewish émigré, Barnett Samuel started a musical instrument company in 1832 with Henry and Josiah Solomon. By 1881 the company had premises in prestigious Duke Street, London and were manufacturing a range musical instruments including harmoniums and zithers. By 1914, moving with the times, the company had started making a portable gramophone called the Dulcephone under the trade name Decca. This is believed to be the origin of the Decca brand. Further research into the recipients of the Melbourne and Adelaide exhibition medals may clarify the different spelling used on the second medal. A very rare piece of British Industry-related medallic history.
