WOODBLOCK OF CONFEDERATE FLEET OFF MEMPHIS. Hand-colored 13.5 x 9 (sheet size 22.5 x 15.5 ) woodblo
WOODBLOCK OF CONFEDERATE FLEET OFF MEMPHIS. Hand-colored 13.5 x 9" (sheet size 22.5 x 15.5") woodblock print showing a number of Union ironclads and smaller vessels firing on larger tinclads anchored off the wharf of Memphis. Titled in pencil, lower left "Destruction of the Confederate Flotilla of Memphis" and signed in pencil, lower right "H. Vizetelly 1862." H. Vizetelly (1820-1894) was a British engraver; presumably he bears some relationship to Frank Vizatelly, a British war correspondent and illustrator who came to the US in 1861 and covered the Civil War from the Confederate viewpoint. Harvard's Houghton Library contains a large holding of the former's works, several of which were painted in the Western Theater. It is possible the Henry produced this woodblock from a drawing by Frank. Good color, with toning in blank, wide margins not affecting image.
