WOLLEY & DEACON INFANTRY OFFICER'S SWORD
EARLY WOLLEY & DEACON INFANTRY OFFICER’S SWORD & SCABBARD. Circa 1820-1840. Has gilded brass hilt and mother-of pearl plaques at grip. Grip shows some small amount of wear on both plaques. Pommel is decorated with eagle and 17 stars. Knuckle bow is scrolled where it connects to circular quillon. Knuckle-bow is decorated with lion’s head at center. Counter-guard is decorated with bust of George Washington surrounded by a wreath and floral motif. Both circular quillons are decorated with eagles facing inward toward grip. Straight blade is ornately etched “United States/Wooley & Deacon” and “American Infantry” on reverse. A light gold wash covers the etched portion of the blade and helps to emphasize the decorations. Matching brass scabbard is also ornately etched and decorated. Although sword was manufactured by Wolley & Deacon of Birmingham, England, it was made for the American market.
