Wolfgang Tillmans, a recent recipient of the Turner Prize, is well known for photographs of European youths. His work includes numerous still-lifes, which also make reference to youth culture. Here he combines a pair of Adidas shorts, a chair and a bag to generate, as Benjamin Paul has noted, “a relationship between objects and the priorities and desires of the social milieu in which they appear.” While one may detect a note of homoeroticism in such images, “as often as they may elicit sexual longings in the viewer, they can also inspire more tender longings and associations” (David Deitcher, WOLFGANG TILLMANS, BURG, Taschen, 1998, n.p.).
