WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK
(1824 - 1886) Union major general severely wounded facing Pickett's charge at Gettysburg, also active at Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Fine association partly-printed D.S., 1p. 4to., New York, Oct. 1, 1881, a certificate of membership in The Miltary Service Institution on the United States presented to William M. Wherry, boldly signed by Hancock as president, also signed by Gettysburg Medal of Honor awardee THEOPHILOS F. RODENBAUGH as Secretary. Some dust soiling, largely at bottom, else very good. William M. Wherry (1836-1918) was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on Aug. 10, 1861, where he "displayed conspicuous coolness and heroism in rallying troops that were recoiling under heavy fire" while serving as a First Lieutenant of Co. D, 3rd Reserve Missouri Infantry.
