(1800 - 1865) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. He escaped the hangman, dying just before war's end. Rare war-date A.L.S. ""Jno. H. Winder Bg. Gen"" 1p. 4to., Richmond, Apr. 4, 1862, to A. C. GODWIN, Provost Marshall of Richmond and later brigadier general who fought at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. In part: ""...You will immediately require from each of the...provosts Marshall a report of every person employed in their department & how they are employed...I want this report immediately for information for the War Dept. Is there a man by the name of Bethel employed anywhere..."". A couple of tiny foxed spots, else very good.
