WINDER, JOHN H.
(1800 - 1865) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. He escaped the hangman, dying just before war's end. War-date A.E.S. on verso of a letter from M. S. Rasenally, 1p. 8vo., Richmond, April 28, 1862, begging Winder for work. Winder endorses on verso: "Referred to Provost Marshall J. H. Winder B". Loss to bottom margin of verso, not affecting text, else very good.
