(1800 - 1865) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. He escaped the hangman, dying just before war's end. War-date L.S. "Jno. H. Winder Brig", 1p. oblong 12mo., [Richmond], May 5, 1862, in full: "The Provost Marshall will please look into his charge the case of Mr. Pearry, relating to his trunk in possession of the Southern Express Co & settle it forthright". With a holograph emendation in text. Irregular bottom margin, very good condition.
