WINCHESTER SPECIAL ORDER MODEL 1886 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 38-70. Standard grade rifle in a scarce caliber, with 30” oct bbl, full magazine, half-nickel front sight, semi buckhorn rear sight, uncheckered wood with straight stock and crescent steel buttplate. It also has close-couple double-set triggers. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter indicating that it left the factory in Cal. 45-90 with oct. bbl and set trigger and was initially shipped Oct 29, 1894. It was returned and repaired on April 9, 1895. This is apparently when the longer bbl in a different caliber was installed. SN 88075. CONDITION: Very fine, bbl retains 94-96% strong bright original blue with a couple of spots of rust pitting on the left side and a small ding toward the muzzle. The magazine tube retains 93-95% original blue slightly dulled and turning plum on the outside with a few spots of rust. The receiver retains 80-85% case colors overall, stronger on the left side with some fine surface rust pitting around the edges. The lever retains about 75% case colors, brilliant in sheltered areas and the hammer about 80% fading case colors. The buttplate is mostly a mottled blue brown. Wood is sound and retains 93-95% strong original varnish with a couple of deep bruises on the right side of the stock and two or three gouges on the forearm with usual handling and use marks. Bright shiny bore with a spot or two of light pitting. 4-49968 JR220
