WINCHESTER MODEL 1897 DBL W
WINCHESTER MODEL 1897 DBL "W" . Wonderful classic cartridge board in its orig oak frame with gold gesso inner frame 57-3/4" wide x 40" high, outside dimensions. This board contains a grand total of approx. 225 cartridges, bullets and primer & cap tins. All mounted on a dark green background with the famous center vignette of two hunters, one sitting on a log with two rifles propped nearby and a dead bear in the foreground. Left side between the legs of the "W" has a flying mallard with his beak partially obscured by a cartridge. Right side has a bull moose head. Top center has a large red "WINCHESTER" with other red & white lettering over the surface. Bottom right hand corner is marked "FORBES CO. BOSTON". This is undoubtedly the most famous & desireable of all the Winchester cartridge boards. Back has the orig brown backing paper covering the tie wires & has the usual sticker in the middle that says "PRESENTED WITH COMPLIMENTS / WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / PLEASE HANG IN A PROMINENT PLACE" and bears the number "286" near the bottom. This may be the lowest numbered dbl "W" board known. According to a report on the 1984 W.A.C.A. calendar, the lowest number known at that time was "451". CONDITION: About fine. Red lettering is somewhat faded with the center vignette appearing to have been cleaned & therefore moderately faded. Remainder of the board has a smoky residue with a few scattered white paint spots & fly specks. Frame is open at the corners but sound with damage to the top left edge. Gold inner frame has a few light chips but is easily repaired. Cartridges are all orig with some minor damage to three of the paper shot shells & the paper patches are all turned dark with some chipping to the patch paper. Three or four of the cartridges have been rewired but all are original. 4-57042 JR719 (20,000-35,000)
