WILSON, WOODROW
(1856 - 1924) Twenty-eighth President of the United States who passed sweeping reform laws, gave women the right to vote, and led the United States through World War I setting the ground work for the League of Nations. Fine content A.N.S. ""W. W."" as President penciled at the bottom of a T.L.S. sent to him by his son-in-law, Secretary of the Treasury WILLIAM G. MCADOO, 1p. 8vo. on official letterhead, Washington, Apr. 21, 1917. The letter, written just over two weeks after the American declaration of war on Germany, is addressed to ""Dear Mr. President"", and reads in part: ""àWe have three German vessels at PensacolaàI think these vessels should be delivered into the custody of the Navy, so that repairs may proceed without delay and the vessels made ready for serviceàMr. [Josephus] Daniels informs me that you have approved the delivery to the Navyàof the vessels at Baltimore, Charleston, Savannah and New Orleans, and I have instructed the Collectors of Customs at those ports to act accordinglyà"". At bottom, Wilson has drawn a small figure of a finger pointing at his note, which reads: ""All right. I thought that these were included. W. W."". Of course, upon the declaration of war, vessels under an enemies flag were either interned or seized outright, as is the case here. Light toning, a small spot near top margin, overall very good.
