A TLS by Woodrow Wilson's secretary, and two ALS drafts from Edward M. Chapman to Wilson, regarding the appointment of Clarence L. Clark to the position of Postmaster for Lyme, Connecticut: 1. TUMULTY, JOSEPH PATRICK (1879-1954). A single-sheet TLS on White House letterhead, to Edward M. Chapman, on behalf of Woodrow Wilson, regarding Chapman's lobbying for the nomination of Clarence L. Clark to Postmaster of Lyme, Connecticut, September 9, 1913. 9 1/4in. x 5 5/8in. Condition: Both Horizontal folds, and other slight creases, toning, light top edge soiling; small corner tear on one. 2. CHAPMAN, EDWARD M. Two single-sheet ALS drafts to President Wilson, lobbying for the appointment of Clarence L. Clark to Postmaster of Lyme, Connecticut. Chapman takes a personal but deferential tone regarding his request. The drafts are on the letterhead of Chapman's banker/contact when in London, Messrs. Brown, Shipley & Co.'s Traveller's Office. 10 1/8in. x 8in., and 10 15/16in. x 8 1/2in., both folded in half. Condition: One with vertical fold, both with hole punches, toning, light spotting. PLEASE NOTE: 20TH CENTURY DOCUMENTS LETTERS CAN HAVE VARIED TONING FROM AGE; IMAGES MAY APPEAR LIGHTER ON DIFFERENT SCREENS. EDWARD MORTIMER CHAPMAN (1862-1952) was a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author. He graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1890. Chapman was a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635), and a chronicler of his family and the area€™s history. He served as pastor of Old Lyme Church from 1906 to 1915. Chapman had a personal acquaintance with Woodrow Wilson, both before and during his U.S. presidency, through the church and time spent in Lyme, Connecticut. This lot and the other Chapman-related documents offered in this sale were part of a collection of his family papers.
