Group of one secretarial signed, and two stamped signature Woodrow Wilson letters, from his time as president of Princeton University, sent to Edward M. Chapman regarding his sermons at the university: 1. WILSON: Single-sheet typed letter with signature stamp, one Princeton University President letterhead, June 2nd, 1909. Wilson expresses his appreciation of Chapman's sermon at the chapel and proposes dates for him to preach again the next academic year. 8 1/4in. x 5 15/16in. Condition: Center horizontal fold; toned; crease on fore-edge.  2. WILSON: Single-sheet typed letter with signature stamp, one Princeton University President letterhead, September 20th, 1910. Wilson expresses pleasure at Chapman's sermon and extends an invitation to entertain him at Prospect when he is there. 7 3/4in. x 6in. Condition: Good; center horizontal crease, with two lighter creases above and below it. 3. CLOSE, GILBERT F.: Single-sheet typed letter signed by Gilbert F. Close, Sec'y to the President, on Princeton University letterhead, August 25th, 1910. Requesting, on Wilson's behalf, that Chapman preach again the next year. A handwritten note by Chapman on the margin, indicating discussed. 12in. x 7 7/8in., folded in half. Condition: Fold at center, and other slight creases. EDWARD MORTIMER CHAPMAN (1862-1952) was a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author. He graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1890. Chapman was a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635), and he was a chronicler of his family and the area€™s history. He served as pastor of Old Lyme Church from 1906 to 1915. Chapman had a personal acquaintance with Woodrow Wilson, both before and during his U.S. presidency, through the church and time spent in Lyme, Connecticut. This lot and the other Chapman-related documents offered in this sale were part of a collection of his family papers.
