A group of two letters from Woodrow Wilson's biographer, Ray Stannard Baker, requesting personal remembrances of Wilson, and a 13-page handwritten draft of Edward M. Chapman's response: 1. BAKER: Two single-sheet TLS to Edward M. Chapman, November 17, 1925; and December 28, 1925. He states that he is "most interested in everything I can find in regard to Mr. Wilson's religious beliefs and his relationships with the church," and requests documents. The later letter thanks Chapman for his "interesting reminiscences" of Mr. and Mrs. Wilson. 9 3/8in. x 5 9/16in. Condition: Both with two horizontal folds, toning, staining; one with paperclip rust. 2. CHAPMAN, EDWARD M. A 13-sheet signed manuscript draft of Chapman's letter to Woodrow Wilson's biographer, Jay Stannard Baker, sharing his memories of the Wilsons, December 20, 1926. He begins by saying that the letters that passed between him and the Wilson family were not of the "self-revealing sort," and that his acquaintance with the family included a few years when he "saw something of them" when they were in Lyme, and that their connection "ripened into a measure of intimacy." Though he expresses the "reticence" of a clergyman regarding certain matters, he goes on to share several anecdotes and general impressions of Wilson and his family. 11in. x 8 1/2in. Condition: toning, some staining/light spotting, edge tears, partial hole punches on some sheets, some paperclip marks. PLEASE NOTE: 20TH CENTURY DOCUMENTS CAN HAVE VARIED TONING FROM AGE; IMAGES MAY APPEAR LIGHTER ON DIFFERENT SCREENS. EDWARD MORTIMER CHAPMAN (1862-1952) was a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author. He graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1890. Chapman was a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635), and he was a chronicler of his family and the area€™s history. He served as pastor of Old Lyme Church from 1906 to 1915. Chapman had a personal acquaintance with Woodrow Wilson, both before and during his U.S. presidency, through the church and time spent in Lyme, Connecticut. This lot and the other Chapman-related documents offered in this sale were part of a collection of his family papers.
